Multi-Storey Car Park Demolition in Fareham Demonstrates Innovation and Sustainability

In a remarkable display of precision and sustainability, the Osborn Road multi-storey car park in Fareham town centre is in the middle stages of decommissioning. The demolition work commissioned by Neilcott Construction Ltd. for Fareham Borough Council is being carried out by HWM Group.

The project required meticulous planning and collaboration with all stakeholders to ensure the safe and efficient decommissioning of the structure.

Collaborative Planning and Reduced Disruption

Working closely with Neilcott and Fareham Borough Council, HWM Group are executing the demolition project with a focus on reducing risk and minimising disruption in the immediate area. Various dismantling methodologies are being applied to mitigate noise and dust, ensuring a controlled and efficient decommissioning process.

Sustainable Demolition Practices

A key focus of the project is the commitment to sustainability. HWM Group deployed advanced crushing equipment, allowing for the recycling of 100 per cent of the concrete and metal from the demolished structure. Crushing concrete on-site not only reduces vehicle movements but is also repurposing crushed materials into aggregate for land stability on the site with surplus materials contributing to other site stabilisation projects.

Effective Dust Suppression Measures

Addressing environmental concerns, HWM Group are utilising a comprehensive dust suppression strategy. A wide area oscillation dust suppression cannon on the ground, combined with the Komatsu PC390 High Reach excavator featuring built-in dust suppression on the pulveriser arm, are effectively minimising dust at its source. This ensures that dust is contained within the outer walls, minimising any adverse effects on the surrounding environment.

Safety and Risk Mitigation Strategies

Prioritising safety, HWM Group have implemented a ring-fenced and controlled approach, utilising the external structure to contain the demolition process. By demolishing the structure from the inside out in a horseshoe pattern, noise and dust leaving the site are significantly reduced. This approach not only enhanced safety but also showcased innovative methods for managing demolition in densely populated urban areas.

HWM Group Director, Adam Blake, said, “The decommissioning approach taken by HWM Group for the multi-storey car park demolition stands as testament to HWM Group's expertise, commitment to sustainability and dedication to minimising the impact on the local community. As Fareham town centre undergoes transformation, this project sets a benchmark for responsible and efficient urban decommissioning and future development to enhance public services.”
