Land remediation project for Butlins re-development
HWM group have recently completed a complex land remediation project at Butlin’s Holiday Resort in Bognor Regis on behalf of Amiri Construction Ltd.
With the groundworks already well underway, the programme was forced to stop suddenly due to visible asbestos being identified within the made ground. With follow-on trades already scheduled and the critical path at risk, HWM Group were quickly deployed to carry out a detailed Site Investigation. Following a review of the findings, HWM Group created and implemented a remediation strategy.
On-site works included the lifting of existing concrete slabs, removal of concrete obstructions and laying of a piling mat. All concrete arisings, following on-site scrutiny for asbestos contamination, were crushed to produce a 6F2 and utilised within the works to form the piling mat. HWM Group utilised their own in-house concrete crusher to produce over 3000 tonnes of 6F2 resulting in just a few loads of imported material needed to complete the piling mat.
The reduce level dig works needed to be overseen by our in-house technician to visually detect the presence of asbestos and carry out stringent soil classification for the disposal of the waste. Around 2,500 tonnes of contaminated soil were taken to HWM’s soil treatment facility where a recycling rate of over 90% was achieved through our soil treatment process. In addition, almost 8 tonnes of scrap metal were recovered.
All works were carried out in a live holiday resort. HWM Group ensured strict noise and dust control measures were always in place. Background monitoring was implemented throughout to demonstrate the control measures used were effective and successful.
HWM Director, Chris Lynch, said, “This complex project required HWM Group to bring together the expertise from Hazardous Waste Management Ltd and HWM Contracting Ltd to showcase our expertise across a range of disciplines and provide a bespoke service. The team’s ability to react quickly, investigate, advise, create and implement a remediation strategy in a tight time frame enabled us to successfully remediate a notoriously difficult waste stream. ‘Constructing Excellence Through Sustainable Solutions’”.
David Moore, Amiri’s Commercial Director, said, “HWM Group were able to react incredibly quickly and take ownership of all the complex issues. They completed the works diligently and to the required dates at the costs agreed. Both Amiri and our customer were very happy with their performance”.
