Lilly House, Basingstoke Demolition

One of our larger demolition projects started in September 2022 when HWM Group were appointed by Glencar Construction to demolish the Lilly House data centre and office complex in Basingstoke, previously owned by pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly.

HWM Group had a 22 - week timetable to deliver this project with a value of £1.2m.

The old Lilly House site, with its vast two-storey underground parking and five-storey above ground design, provided significant challenges to ensure disruption was minimised to businesses on the industrial estate, a nearby hotel, residential blocks and two busy main roads during the demolition and enabling works. With utilities such as substations, underground power and fibre telecoms running through the site to nearby businesses and a hospital, HWM had to secure and protect these critical infrastructures throughout the demolition and ground stabilisation process.

Work started in September 2023 to:

• Remove all asbestos-based materials from all four structures

• Soft strip each building structure and demolish the buildings to floor slab level.

With our own waste management team, the site was cleared and waste recovered to enable the next stage to breakout and remove floor slabs from the two-storey underground car park and foundations.

A key requirement once at ground level was to:

• Locate and protect all existing drainage systems

• Secure and protect critical utilities infrastructure running through the site

• Crush all arisings for grading and re-use on site (6F2 & Type1)

• Sort, segregate and remove all required waste streams.

The new development will provide a best-in-class working environment with a number of highly sustainable initiatives built in to align with the needs of a modern occupier with Net Zero Target Build.

HWM Group were able to satisfy the demand for significant plant equipment for both the demolition and remediation work due to owning their own demolition, waste handling and recycling equipment and facilities.

HWM Group delivered this challenging project on budget and on time.
